About the scheme

A GOVERNMENT GRANT DESIGNED TO GET OLDER CARS OFF IRISH ROADS

Ready to make the switch to electric? The ICE2EV Scrappage Scheme could help you get there. Backed by a €10 million Government of Ireland fund and administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the scheme offers eligible drivers up to €8,500 towards a new Nissan electric vehicle when they scrap a qualifying older petrol or diesel car.

The process is designed to be simple and hassle-free. Once your eligibility is confirmed, the grant is applied directly to the purchase price of your new Nissan EV, and your Nissan dealer will manage the application process with SEAI on your behalf.

With funding allocated separately to urban and rural applicants, availability is limited. Register your interest below and take the next step towards smarter, cleaner electric driving.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

DO YOU QUALIFY?

To qualify for the ICE2EV Scrappage Grant, both you and your vehicle must meet the scheme's eligibility criteria. Your Nissan dealer will be happy to guide you through the requirements and confirm your eligibility as part of the purchase process.

Step by Step

HOW THE SCRAPPAGE SCHEME WORKS WHEN YOU BUY A NEW NISSAN EV

Your local Nissan dealer is registered with SEAI and will manage the entire ICE2EV Scrappage Scheme application on your behalf. The grant is applied directly to the cost of your new Nissan electric vehicle, making the process simple, seamless and hassle-free.

CHECK IF YOUR CAR QUALIFIES
To be eligible for the ICE2EV Scrappage Grant, your existing vehicle must be a petrol or diesel car registered in 2013 or earlier. It must also have been owned by you for at least 12 months and be currently taxed, insured and NCT compliant (or recently expired within the scheme requirements).
CHOOSE YOUR NEW NISSAN ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Browse Nissan's range of fully electric vehicles and select an eligible battery electric vehicle (BEV) with a retail price under €60,000. Popular qualifying models include the Nissan LEAF, Nissan ARIYA and the all-new Nissan MICRA EV.
YOUR NISSAN DEALER SUBMITS THE APPLICATION
Once you've chosen your new Nissan EV, your dealer will submit the ICE2EV Scrappage Grant application to SEAI on your behalf. Simply bring your vehicle registration certificate and any required documentation, and your Nissan dealer will take care of the rest.
RECEIVE YOUR SCRAPPAGE GRANT INSTANTLY
The €8,500 ICE2EV Scrappage Grant, along with any available SEAI electric vehicle grant, is deducted directly from the purchase price of your new Nissan EV at the point of sale. There's no need to apply separately or wait for reimbursement, helping you save money immediately when switching to electric driving.div>

COMMON QUESTIONS

SCRAPPAGE SCHEME: QUESTIONS ANSWERED

The most common questions Irish drivers are asking about the ICE2EV scrappage scheme and how it works when buying a new Nissan electric vehicle.

APPLICATIONS OPEN EARLY JULY 2026 — BUDGET IS LIMITED +
The ICE2EV scrappage scheme has a total budget of €10 million. Once funds are exhausted the scheme closes — there is no waiting list. Budget is split between rural and urban applicants. Registering your interest with your local Nissan dealer now costs nothing and puts you in the best position to apply the moment the scheme opens.
WHAT IS IRELAND'S EV SCRAPPAGE SCHEME AND HOW DOES IT WORK? +
Ireland's ICE2EV scrappage scheme is a €10 million Government of Ireland programme administered by SEAI. Announced in June 2026 by the Minister for Transport, it offers a €8,500* grant to private car owners who permanently scrap a petrol or diesel vehicle registered in 2013 or earlier and purchase a new battery electric vehicle. The grant is deducted by your EV dealer at the point of purchase. Applications open early July 2026. *This is €5,000 scrappage grant in addition to the standard SEAI new electric vehicle grant of up to €3,500, giving eligible buyers access to up to €8,500 in combined grant support.
CAN I CLAIM BOTH THE SCRAPPAGE GRANT AND THE STANDARD SEAI EV GRANT? +
Yes, you will need your Vehicle Registration Certificate (log book) for the car being scrapped. Your dealer will also verify the vehicle is taxed and insured, and that the NCT has not expired more than 6 months before your application date. Your dealer will guide you through anything else required when you visit.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY OLD CAR — CAN I TRADE IT IN? +
No. Under the ICE2EV scrappage scheme terms, your old vehicle must be permanently scrapped by a registered EV dealer — it cannot be traded in, sold privately, or kept. This is a condition of the grant, designed to permanently remove higher emission older vehicles from the Irish roads.
HOW IS THE RURAL AND URBAN BUDGET SPLIT DETERMINED? +
65% of the total budget is reserved for rural applicants and 35% for urban applicants. SEAI uses the CSO's Urban City 2025 classification based on your Eircode. If your category's budget is exhausted before you apply, you will not be eligible in that round. Your Nissan dealer can confirm your category in advance.
CAN I COMBINE THE SCRAPPAGE GRANT WITH NISSAN €4K YOUR WAY +
Yes, in most cases. The scrappage grant reduces the on-the-road price of the vehicle before combined with any other offer. Contact your local dealer to discuss further savings.
